  2. As He Rides Off Into Retirement, How Will the MMA World Remember Brock Lesnar?

    December 31, 2011 by

    Filed under:

Brock LesnarLAS VEGAS — He came, he fought, he left. After a career that spanned just shy of 55 months and only eight fights, Brock Lesnar is calling it quits. So he says. So he declared after a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 on Friday night.

If he changes his mind once his body and his ego have both healed up, he won’t be the first. But if the 34-year-old former UFC heavyweight champ really has strapped on his last pair of 4XL gloves, what does his departure mean for the UFC and the sport of MMA? How will we remember Lesnar once we don’t have the former WWE star to kick around anymore?

For UFC president Dana White, the answer probably has at least a little something to do with dollars and cents. Despite his inexperience in the cage, Lesnar immediately became one of the top pay-per-view draws for the organization after signing on in 2007. Whether it was because fans wanted to see him win or desperately hoped to see him lose, he put butts in seats and money in the bank for the UFC. He may not have always been the easiest guy for the UFC brass to work with, but he was a dependable cash cow.

And now, just like that, he’s gone.

“I had no idea he was going to do that,” White told reporters at the post-fight press conference. “Am I surprised? No. Brock Lesnar’s made a lot of money in his career and he’s achieved a lot of things. Brock Lesnar came to me one night here at the MGM and pulled me aside and said, ‘I want to fight in the UFC.’ I laughed. He was 1-0, came from the WWE, and he brought a lot of excitement to the heavyweight division. What that man accomplished in a short amount of time with one [prior] fight is amazing. I get it. It doesn’t shock me, but I didn’t know.”

For the man who could turn out to be Lesnar’s final opponent, the news seemed to come as more of a surprise, and maybe even a bit of disappointment.

“I think he shouldn’t walk away, because love him or hate him, it’s always something when Brock’s fighting,” Overeem said. “…He’s a guy who goes for it. I think he achieved a lot in a short span, and it would be a shame if he stops now.”

And yet, the Lesnar who got battered and beaten by Overeem didn’t seem to be one who was burning up with an unquenchable competitive fire. He fought a reactive fight — one devoid of the raw aggression he’d displayed in his earlier bouts. He never committed to getting Overeem to the mat, and a few well placed body shots sent him scurrying for cover. When Overeem whipped his shin across Lesnar’s midsection, that was all it took to convince the former NCAA wrestling champ that it was time to cover up and go home, perhaps for the last time.

What does that ignominious end mean for Lesnar’s legacy? Odds are it will only solidify the oft-repeated criticism that he never really got comfortable with being hit. When Lesnar was on offense, he was a juggernaut that mowed down everything in his path. But when an opponent managed to turn the tables he tended to shy away from the blows, going from attack mode to full retreat in a few seconds.

    %VIRTUAL-Gallery-142683%

Some of that can be attributed to inexperience. After a pro debut against the thoroughly forgettable Min-Soo Kim, the bulk of Lesnar’s MMA education took place on the job. He fought many of the best heavyweights around without the benefit of a gradual build-up or even much cage time in which to get comfortable. He was a star from the very beginning, and he was held to an almost impossibly high standard. He was also paid accordingly, making his relatively short stint in the UFC a highly profitable one.

But if he really is done with the sport, will Lesnar be remembered as a great heavyweight, or simply a memorable one? There’s no denying his star-power, but did he accomplish enough to be known as anything more than a lightning rod with incredible athletic ability and raw physical potential?

It’s difficult to say, in part because it’s hard not to wonder what he might have accomplished had he not been laid low by diverticulitis at the height of his career. Instead of challenging Junior dos Santos earlier this year, Lesnar had to go under the knife to have 12 inches of his colon removed. It might not have had any bearing on his fight with Overeem, but his health struggles almost certainly influenced his decision to hang up the gloves when he did, and deprived him of precious time to carve out more of a fighting legacy for himself.

Lesnar was a man who came to MMA relatively late in life and now seems intent on leaving early. He was memorable, even if he fell short of true athletic greatness, and he brought mainstream attention to the sport at an important time in MMA’s evolution.

Maybe when we look back on his brief career, that’s what we’ll remember most. Not that he dominated or even that he stuck around long enough to find out what he was fully capable of, but that he did a lot in a very little time, and he left the sport in better condition than he found it. Maybe that’s enough for him to feel satisfied in retirement. Maybe it has to be. And sure, maybe all the money he made in the process doesn’t hurt either.

  7. UFC 141 Live Blog: Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks Updates

Jon Fitch faces off with Johny Hendricks at UFC 141.LAS VEGAS — This is the UFC 141 live blog for Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks, a welterweight bout on tonight’s UFC pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Fitch (23-3) fought B.J. Penn to a majority draw at UFC 127 in February. Fitch has only lost once (against Georges St-Pierre) in the last eight years. Hendricks (11-1) won both his fights this year against T.J. Waldburger and Mike Pierce.

    The live blog is below.

Round 1: Steve Mazzagatti starts us off, and no glove touch for these two. Fitch tries a little lunging right hand that comes up short. Hendricks comes forward and blasts him with a big left that stiffens Fitch up and drops him to his back. Hendricks jumps on him as Fitch sits up into another punch, and Mazzagatti steps in to stop it. That was quick. The kind of fight where they can show the whole thing rather than highlights. Hendricks parades around the Octagon with a wide grin showing through his beard. He looks just a little bit surprised, too.

  9. 2012 MMA crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

2012 MMA crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

Jon Jones still has much to accomplish at light heavyweight, but as 2012 moves along there could be more and more talk of the 6-foot-4, 24-year-old seeking fights outside the division.

It’s very unlikely to happen in 2012, but what if Jones moved to heavyweight?

Adam Hill penned a thought provoking piece for ESPN.com (premium access required). Hill spoke with Las Vegas and off-shore oddsmakers to ask what the odds would be if Jones locked horns with any of the top five heavyweights in the world.

The guys who set the numbers were split on their opinion of a Jones move up. Rob Akers, who used to set the numbers for the Venetian Sports Book, agreed with off-shore bookmaker Bovado (formerly Bodogsports.net) and said Jones would be a sizable dog against the top big boys in the world (featured odds in the graphic).

Bovada’s expert Kevin Bradley makes UFC heavyweight champ the biggest favorite against Jones.

“Junior dos Santos’ striking power makes him a significant favorite against Jones here,” said Bovada sports book manager Kevin Bradley. “In order for Jones to have a shot at winning, he would have to take him to the ground, basically eliminating his boxing from the equation. Unfortunately, for Jones all fights start standing up and Dos Santos has an 85 percent takedown defense.”

2012 MMA crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweightLouis D’Andrilli, who sets the odds at Cantor Gaming (runs the books at The Venetian, The Hard Rock, M Resort, The Tropicana, and in the future The Palms) in Las Vegas, completely disagrees with Akers and Bradley. He says Jones would be a small favorite against the heavyweights. I don’t believe that would be the case, but I’m a lot closer to siding with D’Andrilli.

Jones walks around at 225. His older brother Arthur, a defensive lineman with the Baltimore Ravens, is 6-3, 313. His younger brother, Chandler is a 6-5, 251-pound defensive lineman at Syracuse.

Jon’s build is different than his brothers because he lacks bulk on his legs, but there’s little doubt that he could pack on some extra muscle and walk into a heavyweight fight at 235. If he retained most of his athleticism and speed, is Jones really at a disadvantage against a 240-pound JDS or 244-pound Cain Velasquez (he was overweight for his last fight)? Jones is pictured next to the former UFC champ Velasquez. Does he look that much smaller?

This isn’t about what I think or what Akers, Bradley and D’Andrilli this of Jones’ actual shot to win these fights. The number is set to pull in two-way action. Once the public saw Jones carrying 235 pounds very easily, momentum would build that he has a good shot against the heavyweights. Therefore, money would come in on the smaller, more athletic fighter.

Looking for another light heavyweight who made the jump? We already have the test case in Randy Couture. Sure, the heavyweight division is better now than it’s ever been, but the 220-pound Couture more than held his own against the heavyweights he faced from 2007-2009. Couture never appeared to be at a strength disadvantage against Tim Sylvia (263), Gabriel Gonzaga (252), Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (231) or  Lesnar (265).

Lesnar might be the toughest nut to crack for Jones. The former WWE star is super athletic and would likely outweigh Jones by 40 pounds. Would a gameplan of staying outside and trying to pick apart Lesnar be enough for Jones? Possibly, but if Lesnar ever got Jones in the clinch, it’s hard imagine the lanky fighter staying on his feet.

Let’s give it some time. Jones could have some very tough tests to  get through at 205 with Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, Dan Henderson, and possibly Muhammed Lawal down the road. All four have excellent wrestling backgrounds. Evans, Henderson and Lawal have big power too. No one here is saying that he destroys all four of those fighters, but if he does, the giants of MMA will welcome a Jones climb into the heavyweight division. So will fight fans.
